about

“At The Wheel”, a Soccer Mommy-adjacent song about becoming an adult and suddenly finding yourself responsible for not just your own destiny but the future of the planet. “It’s embarrassingly earnest,” she says of the track, in which she questions “who’s at the wheel these days?” from a bed of idiosyncratic lyrics and melodies. “It’s about how the small things feel big, and how you try to relate to the big things but the everyday stuff takes up so much real estate. There are these flashes of ‘oh fuck!’ but then you’re like… ‘wait, where's my keys?’” The feeling of powerlessness though is all-too-relatable.

lyrics

At the wheel
let the phone ring i don’t wanna talk
take the bus though it’s quicker to walk
my friends let it slip, they’ve been talking about me
they’ve been worried about me lately

i’m out having a cigarette on my own
i don’t think it’s worth dying for i just wanna know
what it’s like having a smoke alone
who’s at the wheel these days?

who raised the stakes
so high
they gotta be out of their goddamn minds

once again
i am looking
for a heavenly father or friend
or something
who’s at the wheel these days

i’ve been worried about my friends too
been worried about us all to tell the truth
about five degrees in my time
we go out drinking while the world dies

pretty sure i don’t know where my keys are at
know i owe some people money but i’ve kind of lost track
i feel there’s an appointment i forgot
who raised the stakes these days

once again
i am looking
for a heavenly father or friend
or something
who’s at the wheel these days
once again
i am looking
for a heavenly father or friend
or something
who’s at the wheel these days

Through her diaristic lyrics, the super smart environmentalist writes hook after hook as she navigates her inner conflict. And indeed, in putting her own life into words, she has unknowingly narrated our collective existential angst. ... more
